The duties of a NYS Senate Member:

A New York State Assembly Member is responsible for introducing and voting on state laws, shaping the state budget, overseeing state agencies, and representing the needs of constituents in their district. They serve two‑year terms and work both in Albany and in their home districts.

Salary: $142,000/year + Per diem @ $203/day

Core Responsibilities

1. Lawmaking & Policy Development

Assembly Members:

• Introduce, debate, and vote on bills that affect statewide public policy.

• Pass laws on issues such as education, public safety, housing, transportation, health, and the environment.

• Vote to uphold or override the Governor’s vetoes.

2. Budget & Fiscal Responsibilities

Assembly Members play a central role in the state’s finances:

• Negotiate and shape the New York State budget during the annual budget process.

• Raise or lower taxes as part of fiscal legislation.

• Work with the Senate and Governor to finalize the state’s spending plan.

3. Oversight of State Government

They provide checks and accountability by:

• Conducting oversight of state agencies and entities to ensure proper performance and compliance with law.

• Holding hearings with agencies and stakeholders to gather information and evaluate programs.

4. Committee Work

Assembly Members serve on multiple committees that review legislation in specific policy areas. Committees:

• Hold hearings

• Amend and advance bills

• Produce reports and recommendations

5. Constituent Services & District Representation

Assembly Members:

• Advocate for constituents, especially those facing difficulties accessing services or navigating state systems.

• Collaborate with local agencies to resolve constituent issues.

• Gather community input on legislation and local needs.

6. Legislative Session Requirements

• Members are required to report to Albany during the first six months of the year for the legislative session.

• They also work year‑round in their districts on constituent services, events, and policy development.

7. Community Engagement

Assembly Members:

• Facilitate civic and public health initiatives in their districts.

• Oversee or support community projects and local funding allocations.
