The Sixth Judicial District consists of Broome, Chemung, Cortland, Delaware, Madison, Otsego, Schuyler, Tioga and Tompkins Counties.

PROFESSIONAL HISTORY

Pete has served for ten years as a New York State Family Court Judge.   During his term he also served for 9 years as an Acting Supreme Court Justice.  As a Family Court Judge Pete resolved many issues including custody, visitation, adoption, neglect and abuse.  As an Acting Supreme Court Justice, Pete presided over the Integrated Domestic Violence Court, helping to protect children and adults from the trauma of domestic violence.  Additionally, as an Acting Supreme Court Justice, Pete also presided over contested and uncontested divorces, criminal matters involving domestic violence, and foreclosures.

Pete has practiced for many years in Supreme Court as an attorney.  Currently, in addition to representing individuals with various issues in Supreme Court, Pete has also been assigned by current Supreme Court Justices and Family Court Judges to represent children as an Attorney For the Child (formerly known as a law guardian).  Pete has been able to use his training from his Masters in Social Work degree, and subsequent practice as a social worker, to assist the children he has been asked to protect and represent.

VOLUNTEER HISTORY

Pete has been active in our community for many years.  He has served on many nonprofit boards, including the SOS shelter, the Broome County Mental Health Community Services Board, the Crime Victims Assistance Center and ACCORD.  Pete has also been active in coaching youth sports, such as soccer, baseball, basketball and the Vestal Kids Night Out program.  Pete also frequently volunteers as a Judge for the area High School Mock Trial Competition.

PERSONAL HISTORY

Pete is a third generation Broome County Resident, his grandparents having settled in Broome County in the early 1900s.  Pete graduated from Johnson City High School and he and his wife, Dr. Susan Blue (a local Psychologist) currently reside in Vestal.  They have two adult sons, Jordan and Joshua.  Pete and Susan belong to St. John’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Johnson City.

THE FUNCTION OF THE NEW YORK STATE SUPREME COURT

The New York State Supreme Court is a trial court of general jurisdiction.  The Justices preside over contested and uncontested divorces, monetary claims, actions seeking equitable relief and article 78 matters.  Many of the matters in Supreme Court tend to be emotionally charged.  Pete’s years as a Family Court Judge and Acting Supreme Court Justice have provided an excellent wealth of knowledge and experience for deciding and resolving matters which come before a Supreme Court Justice.

“A Supreme Court Justice must have leadership ability tempered with restraint.  Mature character, ability to maintain composure under stress, and respectful demeanor towards all people are vital to appropriately and wisely manage the immense power inherent in the position of New York State Supreme Court Justice”.

Three New York State Supreme Court Justices for the Sixth Judicial District will be elected this November.
