Judge Claudette Newman has close to 20 years of experience practicing in State Supreme Court.
She is the court attorney for the Chenango County Court, a multi-bench court, where she handles criminal and civil cases as well as cases from the County’s Family and Surrogate’s Court. She also presently serves as the Town Justice for Butternut Town Court in Otsego County.
Claudette has the experience, the knowledge and the commitment to the law and our community that we need in our next State Supreme Court Justice.
Claudette presently serves as the Court Attorney for the Hon. Frank B. Revoir, the Chenango County Judge. The court handles a wide range of legal matters including criminal, family court, surrogate’s court and limited civil court cases. Claudette provides the judge with the legal analysis, research and the written communications he needs to render decisions. She also helps to draft decisions, jury charges and verdict sheets and communicates with attorneys and folks who represent themselves with cases before the court.
From 1999 through 2018, Claudette served as the Principal Law Clerk for State Supreme Court Justice Kevin M. Dowd who retired last year. As Dowd’s Principal Law Clerk, Claudette reviewed all the cases that came before the Court including matrimonial, municipal, zoning, personal injury, contract, mental health, felony criminal and Family Court cases. She provided in-depth research and legal analysis for Judge Dowd and drafted the Court’s decisions.
Claudette was elected as Butternut Town Justice in 2011. She has served on the bench since 2012 where she presides over criminal offenses, civil matters, small claims, vehicle and traffic matters and local ordinance violations. She runs the court single-handedly scheduling the court calendar, keeping all financial records, supervising the Court Clerk, applying for grants and interacting with the Town Board.
Claudette was born and raised in the area. She married her husband, Larry, and raised her children here. She’s committed to both this community and to the law.
Claudette has served as President, Past President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary of the Chenango County Bar Association. She is a Founding Member of the Del-Chen-O Chapter of the Women’s Bar Association of New York State. She is also a member of the Otsego County Bar Association and a member of the New York State Bar.
Claudette is a graduate of Albany Law School (1994) and holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Binghamton University (1991).
Judge Claudette Newman will be running on the Democratic Ticket. Her election is on November 5th, 2019.
